The EPF or Employees’ Provident Fund is a retirement benefit scheme offered to salaried employees, which is regulated by the Employee Provident Fund Organisation. Employees getting registered under the EPF scheme are assigned a Universal Account Number, which is assigned to every EPFO member contributing to this scheme. Employees Provident Fund Organisation members have a 12-digit Universal Account Number that remains unchanged throughout their careers. Every salaried employee in a company making contributions to the Employee Provident Fund gets a UAN that was initiated to establish a unified platform for employees to access their EPF accounts. Perhaps, while switching jobs, employees will be assigned a new EPF member ID but their UAN will remain the same.
When UAN is generated, the EPFO member needs to register his/her mobile number while signing up for the first time on the EPFO portal. All EPFO members need to register their mobile numbers in the portal to access a variety of services on their registered mobile numbers. Upon initial registration on the EPFO portal, new members must register their mobile phones. The process to activate the UAN involves visiting the EPFO portal, selecting the ‘Activate UAN’ option, entering the UAN number, date of birth, email ID, and mobile number, receiving an OTP on the given mobile number, and submitting it to activate the UAN, thereby linking the number to the EPF account.
EPF Mobile services offer various benefits such as checking EPF balance, claim status, last contribution, and linking status of bank account, PAN, and Aadhaar. Additionally, SMS updates are received for contributions, withdrawal requests, and OTPs for validation during portal activities, making the process more seamless for members. Employees can access a range of EPF services via SMS on their registered mobile number, including:
Thus, the EPFO members need to keep their mobile numbers updated to avoid missing out on essential services.
Though employees have the option to change their mobile number in their EPF account but there may be situations in which they might not be able to online update it. In case employees have forgotten their password or changed their mobile number or lost their mobile phones, then they will find it difficult to online update their mobile number. In such conditions, they need to look for offline methods to update their mobile number. Here are the steps to change the mobile number in the EPF account offline:
Employees need to keep their mobile number updated in their EPF account, which will serve them with the following benefits:
If employees wish to receive any of the EPF-related services, they need to have an updated mobile number on the EPFO portal. This is because, for most of the services, a one-time password is sent to the registered mobile number, which employees have to provide to access the requested service. This will only be possible with the help of an updated mobile number, so every member of the EPFO portal must always keep their mobile number updated in the portal, either online or offline. In addition to this, even employees’ EPF balance and notifications regarding employer contributions are sent to the registered mobile number. Thus, if the number is not updated, EPF balance and monthly contribution information will not be received by the employees.
